Abstract
SUMMARY Pavlenko N. A. Gender Component in the Structure and Semantics of English Phraseological Units. – Manuscript. Dissertation for Candidate Degree in Philology (PhD): Specialty 10.02.04 – Germanic Languages. – Zaporizhzhia National University. – Zaporizhzhia, 2017. This dissertation focuses on gender component in the structure and semantics of English idioms. The cognitive and linguocultural approach pursued in the research enabled to reveal sociocultural parameters of the English-speaking community as well as the trends determined by gender roles opposition. With sampling material selection procedure being suggested the corpus of English gender idioms has been compiled. Referring to the socially constructed characteristics of women and men – such as norms, roles and relationships of and between groups of women and men gender is represented in the language model of the world by different language means, idioms among them. There are different ways of expressing gender in idioms. It can be a formal component in the idiom structure, it can be part of the idiom meaning. It can be identified both in the structure and the semantics of the idiom as well. Semantic and linguocultural peculiarities of English phraseological units with gender component have been described. Universal and culturally specific constants, connected with the opposition “masculine” / “feminine” have been highlighted. Patterns of lexicographic representation of gender idioms under analysis have been worked out. English phraseological units with gender component possess a great research potential as subject for deeper insights into such extralinguistic factors as social stratification of the English speaking community and gender marked communicative behavior. The research of gender idioms structure resulted in defining productive patterns of formation of phraseological units with gender component as well as peculiarities of phraseological nomination, that substantially contributes to revealing of ethno-cultural traits of the concepts of masculinity / femininity. The analysis has shown that traditionally masculine gender-marked idioms prevail, which adds up to the androcentric nature of the English language and its phraseological system in particular. The conclusion is made that the core of the English culture as reflected in the language phraseological system is masculine, while feminine is characterized by the peripheral status.
