Abstract

The op-ed provides an overview of the challenges associated with the referendum process in the Italian Republic. The approach in the op-ed is given in the context of the analysis of Italian sources and literature. The evolution of the Euro-Atlantic perspective of the Italian Republic as the EU's founding state has also been made through the understanding of domestic policy processes, in particular, through the announcement by Matteo Renzi to hold a referendum in December 2016.
