This article is devoted to the analysis o f modern methods and methodology o f research o f the history c publishing business. The study o f the object o f analysis is impossible without a digression into the past and clarifying its roots. The author made an attem pt to generalize the methodological basis o f research based on the main principles o f kistoricisr and scientific objectivity, the fundamental provisions o f both domestic and individual foreign historical, philosophies and political concepts on the laws and certain specific features o f formation and development o f publishing. I t is concluded that applying general scientific and special methods and approaches makes it possible to trace the m a r stages and trends in development o f publishing business, to clarify its specificity, its role and place at different stage of its development. It is possible to carry out research tasks as to a systematic and complex analysis of the state of smaL publishing business, its impact on development of civil society through formation of middle class and comprehensin democratization o f all state and state institutions based on empirical and theoretical methods of research
