Abstract
The article analyzes the conditions of stay and the main manifestations of the cultural and educational activities of interned Ukrainian soldiers in the camp of Kalisz (Poland) in 1923. On the basis of the use of the materials of the camp magazine «Ukrainian Trumpet» and archival sources, the author concluded that the camps of the everyday war was marked by significant difficulties due to the extremely limited material resources. In turn, the Polish authorities took measures to reduce the number of interned to eliminate the camps. Despite this, the interned Ukrainian soldiers made every effort to revitalize their own cultural and educational life, which had a positive effect on the moral spirit of warfare. Studying in camp schools, attending various educational courses allowed everyone to refill their knowledge, which was extremely important in terms of emigration. An important part of the camp life was the work of international charitable organizations focusing on helping children and women who suffered the most from the harsh conditions of the camp isolation. At the same time, the Ukrainian emigration charitable organizations provided financial assistance to the interned, thus the camps' cultural and educational centers continued their extremely necessary activities. The funds of the benefactors were spent in the camp, by the decision of the special «regulatory committee», the work of the educational centers and artistic and cultural circles was supported by the money from the «Boris Grinchenko School-based Fund». The performances of the cultural and art collectives of the camp, all of which were national in content, were of great importance for raising the morale of the interned, thus contributing to the spiritual consolidation of Ukrainian warfare. In addition, thanks to the Ukrainian song, music, and dramatic art, a positive vision of the Ukrainian People's Republic and Ukrainians was established among Polish society as part of the European political and national-cultural space. The most important thing in this process was that the interned searched for and found their original expression in their artistic quest, thus making their contribution to the treasury of Ukrainian national culture. Through the humanitarian assistance of charitable organizations and individual donors, the interned were able to adapt to the new realities of living in a foreign country, some of them received new specialties and were able to find work. All the time, Kalisz remained the center of the military organization of the interned Army of the UPR.
