Abstract
The article presents some of the approaches to understanding the ways of effective acquisition of reading competence by elementary school students. The indicated psychophysiological mechanisms for the formation of readership competence in students. The stages of formation of the competence of the conscious reader and the influence on this process of psychophysiological mechanisms of students' sensitivity are revealed.
