Abstract
The article deals with the semantics of voice constructions with verbs in -nan in ancient Germanic languages: Gothic, Old Saxon, Old English, Old Icelandic and Old High German. The author determined that this phenomenon could not be attributed to the general German phenomenon, but only to the Gothic - Scandinavian language area. Also the author proved that the verbs of class IV became one of the actualizers of the creation of a modern category of voice of the Germanic languages.
