Abstract
Implementing a competency based approach to the schooling of literature requires, first of all, the development of general cultural competence of students, aimed primarily at developing the ability to take active part in the dialogue of cultures. Successful implementation of this task is impossible without the background knowledge acquired at Literature lessons, which makes it possible to perceive the work of art according to the author's intention. The book provides guidance on the use of various types of background knowledge at Literature classes devoted to the study of the works of art of different genera and genres; it analyzes the peculiarities of their perception by pupils of different age and level of literary development.
