The article reveals the topical questions of the methodology of studying characters of literary works, implemented in textbooks on foreign literature for high school. It is noted that the importance of the chosen problem is due to the inclusion of the concept of “character” in the main content of literary education, it is the basis of the analysis of a literary work and provides a perception of the ideological and aesthetic content. It has been established that educational programs in foreign literature always determine the range of questions about characters, which must be disclosed in the process of studying each particular literary work, but they do not detail the content of the text and non-textual components of the textbook. Accordingly, the authors are free to choose ways and means to achieve the goal. Approaches to the analysis of heroes of a literary work are characterized in the didactic system of textbooks, which provides the disclosure of the content of teaching and offers a specific model of educational process. The methodical features of the realization of the contextual studying of characters of literary works of other cultures are revealed. It is argued that the key to effective study of them is to take into account national, universal, historical, cultural and philosophical contexts in the historical-literary, biographical, analytical and didactic blocks. This approach will provide a reasoned disclosure of the content of learning and the development of abilities, skills and practices of young readers. It is proved that all components of educational books require a thorough revision that will allow students to independently establish causal relationships between characters and contexts, to determine the role of contexts in revealing the ideological and aesthetic content of characters, to understand the role of heroes of a literary work in the formation of their own worldview
