Abstract
The Ukrainian intelligentsia during the Russian Empire played an important role in the formation of the national identity of the Ukrainian people. Most of her tried to act within the legal framework, including developing science. The protection of monuments was among such activities. The famous art historian, academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences Alexey Petrovich Novitsky himself evolved from a Russian art historian, the first chronicler of the Tretyakov Gallery and the historian of the Wanderers to the Ukrainian scientist, the author of the first thorough monograph Taras Shevchenko as an artist. The purpose of this work is to highlight the activities of the academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences O.P. Novitsky, the chairman of the All-Ukrainian Archaeological Committee, at the beginning of the 20th century. in the preparation and work of the XIV Archaeological Congress in Chernigov. Alexey Petrovich Novitsky (7 [19] IV.1862-24.IH.1934) January 9, 1904 was elected a corresponding member of the authoritative monuments of society, not only in Moscow, but throughout the Russian Empire - the Moscow Archaeological Society. He also participated in the Archaeological Congresses, which were held by the Moscow Archaeological Society. From the Architectural Society on April 3, 1908 he was elected at the XIV Congress, which was held in Chernihiv in honor of the millennium of the city. He received the same mandate on May 6 from the Moscow Archaeological Society. A trip to Chernigov and communication with the most famous scientists, participation in fruitful discussions contributed to the scientific growth of A. P. Novitsky. At the same time, A. P. Novitsky posed a problem that he considered it necessary to consider in Chernihiv: "A review of materials on the archeology of Ukraine in the travels of foreigners in Russia." At the congress itself in Chernigov, A.P. Novitsky made an original report “Identity Traits in Ukrainian Architecture”, which provoked a lively discussion.
