Abstract
The article deals with the activities of the Military Sanitary Mission for the captives of Ukrainian soldiers, which started its activities in Germany in the fall of 1918, with the task of establishing the process of their repatriation. After coming to power of the Ukrainian People's Republic Directory, repatriation of captive Ukrainians on a large scale was considerably complicated due to a number of foreign policy reasons; therefore the Mission concentrated its efforts on establishing links with Ukrainian camp communities in order to provide them with targeted assistance from the Government of the UPR. Another of its tasks was the restoration of national-educational work among captives of Ukrainians, for what in its structure the cultural-educational department was created, the head of which was appointed well-known Ukrainian philologist and educator V.Simovich. During 1919, the Mission had a significant organizational and mobilization impact on the Ukrainian community in Salzwedel, finding opportunities to provide material assistance to the camps, as well as cultural and educational institutions in this camp. Due to the publication in the camp of the newspaper «Shljah», the mission maintained a constant connection with the prisoners in Salzwedel, and with other Ukrainian communities, the founding and further operation of which became possible due to its organizational measures. In particular, in the camp of Salzwedel there was a theater, a school for illiterate and illiterate, a library; the work of which was provided by several Ukrainian organizations and circles. However, the lack of effective shifts in the organization of the repatriation of captive Ukrainian soldiers home has created a favorable ground for the scheduling of Bolshevik agitators in the camp of the Tories. As a result of this mood, most of the prisoners gained a definite anti-Ukrainian orientation, and already in 1920 the relations of the Mission with the camp community of Salzwedel were almost confrontational in nature, which was due to the suspension of the provision of any humanitarian assistance to the prisoners. The perplexity of some of the prisoners captured by the Bolsheviks so large that it prevented the conduct of charitable campaigns in favor of the captured soldiers (as was the case during the performance of the Ukrainian Republican Chapel in Salzwedel in June 1920). Despite this, it should be noted that the mission of the Salzburg camp was objectively positive, testifying to the readiness of the Government of the UPR to come to the aid of captive Ukrainians in Germany.
