The author analyzes the concept of a linguistic picture of the world, its structure and formation mechanisms. Speech is considered as the most important means of the formation and existence of knowledge about the world. The article proposes a method for diagnosing aspects of the conceptual language picture of the world of children 5–7 years old. The technique is aimed at identifying the qualitative features of the awareness of ideas about the world (nature, culture, other people and about yourself), which is presented in linguistic images (concepts) and verbalized in the expressive speech of the child. The methodology defines two aspects of the linguistic picture of the world, the conceptual and substantive aspect and the categorically presentation aspect.The results of a pilot study are presented, with the help of which it is determined that children with a typ-ical development of 5–7 years old are able to define a concept mainly at a specific level using abstract and qualitative characteristics, however, an insufficient level of detailed coherent speech prevails due to the lack of clarity of understanding of the proposed concepts. Children give mostly short answers that reveal only a certain substantial aspect of the concept. The most difficult concepts to define were “the world around” and “leisure”. The concept of “nature” has more diverse associations. The concepts of “friend”, “family” and “school” are more understandable for children. So, the need arises to form a more holistic understanding of the concept in children, which will contribute to a deeper self-awareness, harmonization of their being, and also help them more successfully navigate the world. The formation of a system of concepts about the surrounding world will contribute to the development of a number of mental processes and the personality of the child as a whole, however, it is necessary to coor-dinate the content of the education of children of a certain age group with their specific system of ideas about the world, corresponding to the personal experience of the child.
