Abstract

Ukrainian intellectuals played a crucial role in forming the national identity of Ukrainians while the Russian Empire period. The absolute majority was acting lawfully inter alia by promoting science. Memorials protection was one of the ways. Well-known art historian, memorials protector and the future Member of the Academy VUAN Oleksa Petrovych Novytskyi in the end of ХІХ century — in the beginning of ХХ century evolved from a Russian art historian, the first chronographer of the Tretyakov Gallery and the historian of the artists – peredvyzhnykiv to Ukrainian scientist, the author of the first Taras Shevchenko monography as the decorator. The objective of this paper is to reflect the activities of the future Member of the Academy VUAN O.P. Novytskyi, the Head of Ukrainian Archeological Committee at the beginning of XXth century and on preparation for and work at the XIV the archaeological Conference in Chernihiv. Oleksa Petrovych Novytskyi (7 [19] ІV. 1862 — 24. ІХ. 1934) on 09 January 1904 was elected a member-correspondent of one of the most well-known memorials protecting Association not only in Moscow but in the whole Russian Empire – Moscow Archeological Association. He was also a part of the main forums of pre-revolution times – Archeological conferences organised by Moscow Archeological Association. As a member of the Architecture Association on 03 April, 1908 was elected as an attendee for the XIVth Conference which took place in Chernihiv, the city was chosen due to its one thousand years anniversary. He was also elected by the Moscow Archeological Association. The trip to Chernihiv, communication with the most prominent scientist accelerated professional development as a scientist of O.P. Novytskyi. At the same time, Oleksa Petrovych Novytskyi presented a work “A review of the archaeological materials of Ukraine in foreigners travels in Russia”. While the Conference in Chernihiv O.P. Novytskyi presented the original speech “Originality features in Ukrainian architecture” which was actively discussed.
