The article emphasizes that the category of state is the unique one characterized by features of different levels – psychological, morphological and syntactical. State relations in the Old Germanic languages do not represent a coherent system. Obviously, the consequence of this problem consists in the polydefinition of the category of state and the blurring of its boundaries as a category. In particular, the article discribes development peculiarities of the state category paradigm in the Germanic languages in the context of linguistic changes that occur under the pressure of the language system. The basic positions of Neogrammarians became fundamental for the scientific research of the formation processes of the state category paradigm in the Old Germanic languages. Based on the Neogrammarians concepts, the author describes natural interdependent processes that took place within the paradigm of the Germanic languages category. In particular, it was made an attempt to explain and analyze systematically the typology of the category of state in the Old Germanic languages. The Old Germanic passive includes the verbs which belong to the paradigm of dynamic and reflexive medium and do not have an object in the accusative case and constitute a group of intransitive verbs. The reflexive includes the verbs which are combined with case-dependent reflexive pronouns in active voice. The article emphasizes that medium becomes the basis for emergence of passive voice; active voice and medium fixed personal endings and represented in speech not only through descriptive structure, but also through simple forms explicated in medial and, more rarely, in forms of active personal endings. In the process of description of the category of state the main difference between active and passive structures not initially outlined, was revealed, and only due to the mutual influence of one structure on another they acquired certain psychological and sense-distinguishing differences. The article specifies that the process of parallel coexistence of verbal forms and voices on the way of linguistic changes took place: at the same time medial forms with medial diathesis are replaced by active forms, their medial significance still retains. The author made an attempt to analyze verbal subsystem of the Germanic languages in dynamics, from the present day to the beginnings, taking into account interaction of intra- and extralingual factors in its formation.
