Abstract
Purpose. The article emphasizes that the category of state is the unique one characterized by features of different levels – psychological, morphological and syntactical. State relations in the Old Germanic languages do not represent a coherent system. Obviously, the consequence of this problem consists in the polydefinition of the category of state and the blurring of its boundaries as a category. Within the theories of generative grammar and functional syntax, the author analyzed the Old Germanic state protocategorial constructions in order to understand the processes of creating ancient structures and the processes of generating a category of state in ancient syntactic structures. Methods. The study based on the following methodological basis: management and binding theory, X-bar theory, displacement theory, government theory, Theta-theory, minimalism theory, referential-role grammar theory. Results. The results of the study give reason to model the structure of syntactical constructions in the paradigm of the category of state in the Germanic languages. The proposed work focuses on the theories of generative grammar and functional syntax, through which the Old Germanic state protocategorial constructions were analyzed in order to understand the processes of creation and generation of ancient structures. The author deals with holistic sentences as well as some verbal phrases for completeness of understanding the syntactic relations realized in the state predicate construction. Conclusion. Taking into consideration all these facts, we conclude that the syntactic structures of the Old Germanic protocategorial constructions considered in the article on the example of trees show different relationships between the vertex and the dependent elements in the state structure and make it possible to have traces, movements, or copying. Via examples of syntactical trees, the clause structure and its projection were analyzed and it was found that the predicate of state forms the core-basis generating the information structure of the Old Germanic sentence.
