Abstract

The author describes the semantic essence of the predicates of perception on the material of ancient Germanic languages (Gothic, Old English, Old Saxon, Old Icelandic, Old High German). Due to the continuous sampling method the state protocategorical structures of the ancient German period (IV-XIII centuries) were analyzed, since in the ancient period there was no perfect paradigm of the category of state and there were no absolute state structures. State predicates of perception are declared in the study as the center of the so-called state situatheme (kernel of expression), which expresses the state relations from the positions of «agent-patent» / «subject-object» and describes, approves or denies a certain state of perception. In the course of the study a semantic approach was used to differentiate the predicates of the state of perception into macro-groups: the predicates of the state of visual perception (state situathemes with intensive use of vision; state situathemes with cognitive optical perception and situatheme with descriptive value «be seen»); predicates of the state of audio perception (state situathemes with intensified hearing, state situatheme with descriptive semen «hear»); predicates of the state of odorative perception (state situathemes with descriptive semen «have a smell», «spread the smell»); predicates of the state of contact influence (state situathemes of the designation of gustatory perception with semen «savor», «treat»; state situathemes of the designation of tactile perception with semen «touch», «active action», «eat»). In particular, the study found that the representation of state situathemes to denote perception in ancient German languages was manifested in semantic and syntactic content in a multifaceted manner. The subgroups of perceptual predicates are distinguished on the basis of the seme «perceive" – "perceive» – «use the ability of perception». The peculiar semantics, the ability to act as a constructive center of a simple sentence and to predict the quantitative and qualitative composition of its components make it possible to separate the state predicates of perception into an independent predicate class. The article presents the main criteria for differentiation of state predicates of perception and describes the ranking of perceptual predicates in the paradigm of the category of state of ancient Germanic languages.
