Abstract

The article seeks to highlight the characteristics of the speech act of adress in the Middle English romances. We consider addresses as an important socio-psycholinguistic phenomenon since the realization of its means depends to a large extent on such factors as the social status of the participants in the speech act, their age, occupation and personal relations, degree of affinity, education, character, tastes, etc. An address is also one of the central units of speech etiquette. The problem of describing the communicative action of adress lies in a particular plane of the research which is due to the asymmetry of the relationship between the form of statements and its content. The function of adresses is to mark the role and social relations that are established within the framework of a communicative act. The fact of the use of one or another adress should inevitably testify to a certain situation, the microclimate of communication and its tone. A comprehensive approach to the study of adress as an etiquette unit has made it possible to establish the dialectical unity of the nominative-meaningful side of adresses with its pragmatic and stylistic function. Thus the pragmatic content of adress qualifies as a component of the semantic structure of the word that materializes extra-linguistic information which correlates with the communicative-pragmatic situation or with its individual parameters. The tendency to simplification applies both to the lexical implementation of the form of adress (renunciation of titles) and to the lexical environment of adresses’ forms: reduction / simplification of the descriptors of adresses. The analysis of romances holds that the functional class of linguistic units of adress in the Middle English may be marked with different constructions. New tendencies in the functioning of appellative pronouns as a means of speech addressee-orientation expression in the Middle English are examined along with the nominal forms of address.
