The present volume contains a series of contributions presented at the “1st International Symposium of Italian-Ukrainian Contrastive Studies”, which took place at the Institute of Philology of the University of Kyiv Borys Hrinčenko1 on 21st June 2018. The event represents one of the few attempts to gather scholars from both Italy and Ukraine in order to focus on problems related to contrastive aspects of linguistics, literature and translation. The Symposium aimed at creating a first working group for studying, at regular intervals, Italian-Ukrainian contrastive grammar and lexis, aspects traditionally associated with contrastive linguistics. It likewise intended to critically evaluate the existing publications in this area and to search for new research perspectives. The original thematic scope of the Symposium was, however, extended to include literary, cultural and translation issues due to the limited number of scholars working strictly in the field of contrastive grammar. Notwithstanding the incomplete number of the papers for publication, we have still been able to cover all three research areas discussed during the Symposium and announced in the title. Moreover, an article on the “Alloglot Lexis and Romance Elements in Ukrainian” has also been added to this volume. The contributions by various Italian and Ukrainian scholars were subject to anonymous peer-review and categorized according to the following tripartite division: linguistics, literature, and translation (translation studies).
