Abstract
From the above discussion it can be concluded that ‘cultural turn’ expanded the research fields of translation studies and provided new perspectives of translation. It demonstrated accent on native culture and flexible translation. The accent was shifted from the text to the reader’s reception and the quality of translation depended on it. At the same time, consideration of native culture, social background and tradition led to natural literature for native readers. Besides, translation was regarded as a method of manipulation and creation of certain culture. The author analysed the methodology of ‘cultural turn’ in translation studies and problems of adequacy in translation. Ukrainian translators made a lot of efforts to publish their translations in conditions of official bans. They used domestication as marking the difference from dominant imperial discourse. They used the methodology of ‘cultural turn’ to overcome the stereotype of ‘household language’, consolidate full status of Ukrainian language and to put Ukrainian language at the same level with other foreign languages. It is demonstrated that a great role is on translator’s behaviour and chosen ideology. Within the framework of ‘cultural turn’ translation was regarded as a method of nation formation, creation of own identity and a strategy of cultural development. It is demonstrated that translation is a kind of manipulation. ‘Cultural turn’ demonstrates that translation has wider cultural context. ‘Cultural turn’ and its influence on the development of translation studies in Western culture and in Ukraine have been shown, social causes of ‘cultural turn’ and the shifts it brought up. The case in Ukraine shows a significant parallel with the Western tradition. Ukrainian translators worked under severe conditions and tried to place Ukrainian language and culture at the same level with other languages of the world with the help of their translations.
