Abstract
The subject of the study is the lyrics of the French symbolist Arthur Rimbaud and Ukrainian poets of late modernism Pavlo Tychyna, Mykola Zerov and Maksym Rylakyi through the prism of aesthetic activity of motives of hunger and thirst in their works. The article attempts to distinguish the basic meanings of the "hunger" and "thirst" concepts in the lyrics of different ideological and thematic directions and to compare the two – Ukrainian and French – variants of their artistic interpretation. The common tendency in interpreting hunger and thirst for modernist poets is to express the theme of the tragedy of being primarily in the motives of the tragedy of the situation, lyrical hero and existence. Almost foregoing the formation of the actual gastronomic theme, symbolists and neoclassicists use its elements to interpret the artistic picture of the world (famine as a social catastrophe, hunger as a sense of human being at the turn of the 20th century) and forms of being a modernist poet.
