Abstract

In the article, famous Bashkir writer Mustai Karim’s (1919–2005) creative works “Long, Long Childhood” and “Village Lawyers” are analyzed as novels in novellas. It is pointed out that these works of Bashkir writer genealogically are closer to a genre of a novel than a story. They consist of a big number of separate parts (twenty – eighteen), which have completed autonomous plots and could be considered as separate complete novellas (short stories and even stories). They are bound together into one whole with the help of an image of storyteller (narrator), characters, moving from one novella into another, idea and compositional design etc. “Long, Long Childhood” is also an autobiographical novel, so the narration from the first person was used; the narrator presented himself in turn as a minor and main character, sometimes as an “outside” observer, and he is clearly associated with the real writer Mustai Karim. In “Village Lawyers” the third-person narration is used and the narrator doesn’t participate in events of a novel, but only retells the things he saw himself and heard from the others. Novellas (stories) could be compositionally interconnected with the common themes, motives, or vice versa to make by contrast a compositional frame of the works. “Long, Long Childhood” and “Village Lawyers” by M. Karim were put into a broad context of the novels in novellas of Ukrainian, Russian and Uzbek literatures both in 1920-30s and in the second part of 20th century. Structuring the works as novels in novellas gives an opportunity to imagine panoramic, polyphonic representation of both separate individuals and Bashkirs ethnos of 20th century in general.
