Abstract
The purpose of the article is to identify typological convergences of the leading motives of wokrs by Olena Zvychayna and Eileen Chang in the structure of the artistic model of cultural identity in its national and individual-author versions. The main attention is focused on mechanisms of artistic construction, common and different in the literary explications of national and cultural identity in the Ukrainian and Chinese diaspora prose of the 20th century. The research involves biographical and psychoanalytic methods for decoding the symbolic language of the subconscious in the work of writers, as well as establishing links between the facts of life and ways of modeling the art world. Cultural-historical method and motive analysis allow us to focus on identifying the national specifics of the Ukrainian and Chinese authors and their works, moreover to reveal the motives of creativity. In our opinion a comparative studying of the works by Olena Zvychayna and Eileen Chang makes it possible to ostend the specifics of national and cultural identity; also to deduce the connection between universal, national, authorial motives. In the essays “Lust, Caution”, “Love in a Fallen City” by Eileen Chang and narrations “Letter”, “Limited by the chain” by Оlena Zvychayna our results illustrates role of motives of “mad” relationships, collaborationism, fear, war, emigration, “ruined city” and love in the artistic modeling of national and cultural identity of the characters. We distinguish internal monologue and dialogue, confession, psychological portrait, psychological interior and psychological detail as methods of constructing the art world based on the analysis of the texts. The works by Olena Zvychayna and Eileen Chang are full of intense experiences of the end of individual existence, psychologically convincing, but according to different national and cultural intentions they reveal the state of man in a borderline situation.
