Abstract
The present research paper deals with the development stages of medieval mysticism in the Christian tradition. The study methodology is based on the logical combination of historical, comparative, dialectical, and hermeneutic approach. The authors note it should distinguish between two areas in the development of Christian mysticism – the gnostic way (the way through gnosis as an intuitive comprehension of a higher plane of existence) and moral and practical (the way of changing the own heart by means of the unconditional love for God). In the Eastern Christian tradition, a development of an idea of mysticism takes place under the idea of Neoplatonism about the impersonal divine being, according to which a doctrine about the undefinable God emerges. According to the doctrine, he is known in his creations made in his image which contain the reflection of divine nature properties. The Eastern Christian mysticism finds its further development in the apophatic theology in the works of Cappadocian community, Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, and Gregory Palamas who propose asceticism as a means of achieving the direct experience of divine essence. In the Western Christianity tradition, mysticism develops in opposition to the official church due to its idea of the direct spiritual contact with the divine. The German mystics commitment to the divine excellence runs through spiritual practices and unity of spirit and love. The authors come to the conclusion that in Cristian mystical practices the thing in common is a sacral perspective of reaching a direct sensual unity with God that implements mainly through asceticism as premise for spiritual improvement. The differences lie in the awareness of spiritual unity with the divinity. In the Eastern Christian tradition, a human being inspires by the divine through the love that penetrates into the heart, whereas in the Western Christian tradition a believer rises to the deity. Being under the influence of church institutions, the Eastern Christian mysticism evolves as active and practical, whereas the Western Christian mysticism evolves more like the contemplative one.
