Abstract

The article relies on V. Levytsky’s memoirs which were published in the Ukrainian newspaper “Svoboda” [“Freedom”] (Jersey City, the U.S.). Most information about the various sides of the Ukrainian soldiers’ everyday life at the camps in Kalisz, their leisure, cultural and art activities can be considered as credible despite biased highlighting of the actual situation at the camp in the author’s memoirs. Performances of the camp theatre, choirs and orchestra were an efficient means of preventing the internees’ demoralization; the commemoration of memorable dates, national and state holidays also served this purpose. V.Levytsky pointed out other aspects of internees’ camp activism (e.g. sports, education and self-education etc.), while also drawing attention to the negative aspects of the internees’ environment (such as problems with food supply, absence of resilient national and state aspirations among some officers, desertion). Therefore, V.Levytsky’s memoirs are to be seen as a valuable historical source whose introduction to scientific narrative helps reconstruct previously unknown aspects of Ukrainian interned soldiers’ lifestyle at Kalisz camp.
