Abstract

The article describes the features of the influence of Internet slang on the development of the cognitive activity of student youth to learn a foreign language. The statistics of research conducted by global international organizations on the amount of time spent by young people on smartphones, as well as the gradation of the most popular activities of Internet users. Tendencies of actualization of the problem of Internet slang on the development of the cognitive activity of student youth to learn a foreign language, such as the use of social networks, blogging, online games that young people use during manipulations in online games, correspondence on social networks, filming blogs, video broadcasts on Tiktok, Stories on Instagram, Facebook messenger, Telegram channels, etc. The essence of the key concept of the study «Internet slang» is described, as well as to reveal its origins. Classified tokens belonging to Internet slang by subject are presented. These include: to denote computer hardware and software; names of companies that manufacture hardware and software; names of anti-virus programs; identification of people working in the field of computer technology; designation of actions; words that accompany the process of the user’s work with the computer; evaluative content. Methods of forming language slang units of Internet slang are determined: borrowed words from English; Internet slang in the language of let playing; Internet video blog slang; Internet slang in the written speech of users of forums and social networks; Internet slang in colloquial speech; truncated words; modification of commonly used words and creation on their basis of lexical units with double meaning. The results of our survey conducted on the social network Instagram on finding out the reason for the use of Internet slang by student youth are presented.
