The article is devoted to the analysis of the facts of the history of the Ukrainian language that will contribute to the formation of national identity and historical memory of students during the study of the Ukrainian language, namely: formation of knowledge about the origins of living spoken Ukrainian, Ukrainian language and writing, about entonyms about Ukrainians as a means of political and national identification, about the Ukrainian language on the language map of the world, about the facts of linguocide of the Ukrainian language, about the legal status of the state language in Ukraine. The study identifies the reasons for the need to introduce a historical and linguistic component in the school curriculum for the study of the Ukrainian language. The main idea of the article is the idea that the history of any language is always an ethnopolitical issue, because language is the main ethnic feature; language unites a nation, distinguishes it from other nations, even closely related ones; the common language, culture, national worldview, self-consciousness are formed gradually and together with the language are the essential features of the nation. But the lack of deep professional knowledge, lack of research experience, inability to operate with historical facts and sources, neglect of generally accepted historical and linguistic dogmas lead to manipulation, to the emergence of «fabulous and mythical» ideas about the history of the people and their language. Drawing students’ attention to the important aspects of the origin and development of the Ukrainian language, the history of its functioning (not always free) is a guarantee of a conscious and critical attitude to national history, promoting national identity and patriotism. Article of interdisciplinary linguodidactic, historical-linguistic and sociolinguistic orientation; its task is to help the teacher of the Ukrainian language in explaining the facts of the historical past of the Ukrainian language.
