Abstract
The central purpose of this article is to highlight the nature, place and role of the concept of «adult education» in the system of education of Irish Republic. In order to do so, a general overview of adult education definition is presented. The author investigates and analyzes the genesis of adult education conceptual ideas in Ireland, reveals the contents of definitions and investigates the features of its interpretation in the process of genesis. a brief description of the basic concepts of adult education, including adult basic education, adult literacy, adult learning, further education, continuing education, community education are provided in the article and their definitions are delineated on the basis of the analysis.
