Abstract

In this research, we set the goal to explore the formal structure of terms and its main components. For this purpose, we apply a series of methods used in terminology, logic, systemology etc. The notions of ideal and optimal term length and term structure are considered. An ideal length suggests the length where each term elements denotes only one notion from the conceptual framework of a certain domain or field of activities. An optimal length is the length where real conditions of term creation within a certain term system are taken into account. In respect to term structure, it can be ideal when connections between term elements unequivocally express logical ties between notions, and the optimal structure is the one that a term possesses in a real term system, provided that the composition of its term elements is minimal for this term system, and the connections between term elements express ties between notions, similarly to the situation in an ideal structure. It is discovered that terms can also be other parts of speech, and not only nouns. Nouns and noun-based word combinations are preferred as terms since their key function is nominative / representative; in most cases, names of objects are nouns. Terms are a way of denoting and expressing scientific notions and concepts. Authors are very careful in choosing a formal structure with great consideration of logical thinking needs, as it influences the meaning, accuracy and faithfulness of a separate term alone, and a term as a component of the term system. Therefore, we may conclude that the analysis of formal structure of terms relates terminological methods to linguistic methods to the greatest extent, and reveals the term to have features of linguistic substrate. It should be noted that this kind of analysis is more profound than semantical analysis. It reveals dependence of terms on the language within which they are formed and operate. In addition, this type of analysis enables us to see peculiar features of formal structure of terms, primarily because it distinguishes term elements and components as phenomena that are extrinsic to non-specialized lexical units, and emphasizes particular formal elements of lexicon
