Abstract
A selection of poems of modern Hungarian poets, translated by Pavlo Movchan, was published in No. 5 of magazine “The Vsesvit” in 1988. At that time, several magazine selections and a collection (1988) of Pavlo Movchan’s lyrics translated by Miklos Veresh had already been published in Hungary. During 1986–1988, P. Movchan, who was forbidden to travel abroad, visited Hungary three times, where he established close contacts with local writers. The result of this were the translations on Hungarian language which was made by Ukrainian poet for magazine “The Vsesvit”. Despite friendly relations with M. Veresh, P. Movchan has translated only one of his works. P. Movchan also has translated into Ukrainian two poems written by Ferenc Barany, two poems by Lajos Shimon, and one work by each of the following writers: Imre Diere, András Njerges, Otto Orban (prose poem), Magda Sekey, Deže Tandori, and Zoltan Šumoni. Most of the works are full of anti-war pathos, without excessive ideologization. In terms of versification, they are close to Pavlo Movchan’s works and were extremely innovative for Ukrainian Soviet lyrics of that time.
