Abstract

Goal. To offer a reading of Neda Nezhdana's monodrama “Kitska na spogad pro temen” from the standpoint of modern theory of identity/identities and post-colonial literary studies. Research methodology. Anthropological transition, postcolonial/decolonial studies, memory studies, trauma theory, intertextual analysis. Scientific novelty. The postcolonial/decolonial interpretation of Neda Nezhdana’s play chosen for consideration is an opportunity to start a serious conversation about how modern drama and theater join conversations with society about the new civic identity of Ukrainians. Unfortunately, Little Russianness in the media field, the manipulative strategies of modern television, the expansion of Russian books on the book market and on the Internet, the everyday orientation of many people to the Russian language, literature and the corresponding meanings and pictures of the world they broadcast have formed a mass audience that seeks entertainment and spectacles significantly more than serious analytical conversations and reflections. Such a receptive environment is open to various “plebescites of memory”, as a result of which “memory acquires an entertainment quality”, and the collective past is “taken away from respect, deprived of its elevation and authority”, as a result of which mass symbolic violence against collective memory. Therefore, in the global mental confrontation between our country with centuries-old democratic aspirations and between the totalitarian empire (the “under-empire”, as modern humanitarian discourse has dubbed it), right now is the highest time to promote the Ukrainian cultural product and involve as many people as possible in its reception: the theater has such a unique opportunity, especially in tandem with playwrights capable of generating and beautifying a new meaningful reality.
