Abstract

Abstract. Modern literary journalism (LJ), sometimes referred to as "creative documentary journalism," is a combination of stylistic techniques related to fiction and journalism that provides truthful information. Quite often, using various editing options, literary journalism is complemented by multimedia components such as video and photos, audio and charts, animation and social media messages, which help the audience to experience events from multidimensional perspectives with many nuances and ideas. There are different types of relationships between written texts and videos. Sometimes LJ texts dominate, and all multimedia components play only a secondary role. Sometimes, on the contrary, when the main roles are played by videos, and written texts take a secondary role. The continuum between these two extremes includes a palette of other intermediate options, given the creative nature of all journalists and writers working in this field of modern journalism. An additional option is the fragmentary use of literary journalism in traditional journalistic texts on the sites of well-known television news channels, along with a set of multimedia components. A number of randomly selected multimedia stories from leading US television channels are analyzed for the presence of literary and stylistic devices, such as figurative language and symbols, dramatic tension and emotional appeal, etc. The article considers montage methods of integrating video and photo materials into realistic reporting texts and vice versa. Monitoring of multimedia and literary journalism in the United States using content analysis and empirical approach revealed 40 types of multimedia editing, including video, photo and music editing, of which the most important categories are composition, time, emotions, photomontage and its technique, music. Multimedia literary journalism is still developing and has great potential in the near future.
