Abstract

The School of Historians of St. Volodymyr University in the 19th – early 20th century in Kyiv, as a professor-teaching corporation of individuals who were united by professional status as historians, was formed from professors and assistant professors who worked in the Departments of World History and Russian History after the opening institution in 1834 and until its liquidation in 1920. Their scientific legacy related to different scientific directions and currents, but all of them, as a corporation of historians, belonged to the higher educational institution in which they worked, made their contribution to the development of education, science, and culture of Ukraine, and formed the traditions of the Ukrainian educational and scientific space. Studying the history of the formation and development of the School of Historians of St. Volodymyr University in Kyiv in 1834–1920 is of great importance for understanding the formation and development of university historical education and science in the 19th – early 21st centuries in general. Having analyzed the literature in the historiography of the second half of the 19th century - the first two decades of the 21st century, we investigated the Third period of development of the School of Historians of the University of St. Volodymyr in 1860-1869. We concluded that 1860-1869 was a time of decline in history teaching at St. Volodymyr University, a time of changing generations of teachers and scientists. In the Third development period, the School of Historians of St. Volodymyr University was represented by professors O.I. Stavrovskyi and V.A. Bilbasov, and the University graduates I.V. Lashnyukov, V.Ya. Shulgin, V.G. Avseenko, M.P. Dragomanov. In the late 60s of the 19th century a new generation of scientists-teachers, and graduates of Alma Mater entered the University. V.S. Ikonnikov, I.V. Luchytskyi, and V.B. Antonovych began a fruitful scientific and teaching activity for several decades at the Faculty of History and Philology of St. Volodymyr University. I.V. Luchytskyi at the Department of World History raised his historical school and became the founder of the socio-economic trend in Ukrainian historiography. V.B. Antonovych cherished the Kyiv School of Documentary Historians – Volodymyr Antonovych Kyiv School of Historians. Scientific and teaching activities of the new generation formed the Fourth period of development of the School of Historians of St. Volodymyr University, which we will consider in the next article. The path of formation and development of history teaching and research in the 19th century at St. Volodymyr University reproduces the development path of historical education and science in the 19th century.
