Abstract
The article examines the metaphorical and metonymic methods of term formation in Japanese literary terminology. Based on the material of 756 terminological units, with the help of quantitative analysis method, the quantitative and percentage ratio of metaphor terms and metonymy terms in relation to to the total number of studied terms is established. 18 units (or 2.4% of the total number) of metaphorical origin and 8 units (or 1.1% of the total number) of terms formed using metonymy were found. It was established that some of the metaphor terms had reached our day from the first literary works written by Japanese poets in the 8th century A. D., for instance kokoro 心 “heart”, “soul”, mono-gokoro 物心 “soul of things”, etc. At the same time, two groups of metaphor terms in Japanese literary studies were identified and analyzed. The first group includes neutral and “high” or “aesthetic” terms created mostly by Hei-an artists who adhered to aristocratic traditions and by renga poets, for example, yoha 余波 (literally: “waves after the storm”), nioi 匂 (literally: “fragrance”), etc. According to our observations, the authors of another group of metaphor terms – “low”, “humorous” – were mainly poets of haikai poems, who, as it is known, appreciated a good joke. These literary terms are represented by the following examples: numeri 滑り (literally: “slippery”), shiokarashi 塩辛し (literally: “oversalted”), etc. The research indicates the presence of expressive and ethno-cultural coloring of the analyzed metaphor terms of Japanese literary studies, which can serve for individual studies in the cultural aspect. Terms formed by metonymy are mainly represented by units that contain a numeral in their composition and are mostly built according to the “numeral + noun” model (for example: senku 千句 /literally: “thousand verses”/).
