Abstract

The article examines the functioning of the borderland motif “the Game of God” in the literature. The purpose of the article is to determine the specific features of the author's interpretations of this motif in the prose of neoromanticism. The object of analysis was the stories “The Strange Adventure with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by R.L. Stevenson, the novels “The Island of Dr. Moreau” by H. Wells, and “The Sea Wolf” by Jack London. Historical-literary, hermeneutic, and comparative research methods made it possible to conclude common and distinctive features in the interpretation of the motif “the Game of God” motif in these works. It found that the actualization of the researched motif in the cultural and literary space and the neo-romantical prose was caused by a complex of factors. These are primarily the increased interest of neo-romantics in mythological structures; attraction to the artistic language of Gothic; revision of scientism; critical interpretation of the Nietzschean idea of Superman. The motif of “The Game of God” became one of the optimalartistic structures for embodying the author's “answers” to urgent philosophical, moral, and aesthetic questions of the day. It has been established that in the works of the English neoromantics R.L. Stevenson and H. Wells, the expression of this motif is connected with the image of a scientist-experimenter and the motif of duality. These testify to the writers' orientation towards the continuation of the motif traditional for English romanticism in the context of philosophical and moral issues. The specificity of the author's interpretation of the “Game of God” motif in H. Wells' novel is the polemical pathos inspired by the development of the animalistic theme. A new level of understanding of artistic animalism is also a feature of the problem-thematic content of Jack London's novel. But, unlike the English neo-romantics, the author of “The Sea Wolf” focuses on the repulsion of Nietzschean ideas in the “philosophy” of the main character. The connection of the work of the American neo-romantic with the tradition of national literature can be traced at the level of his transformation of the marine genre with the image symbol of the ship. In the course of the research, was determined that its perspective is the examination of the author's versions of the motive “the Game of God” in the dystopias of the 20th century as a continuation of the artistic practice of neoromantic writers in the anti-totalitarian discourse.
