Ethical aspects of foreign language learning: a study of moral interests of students of higher education

Abstract

Modern pedagogy is characterized by a focus on the formation of various types of competence, including ethical ompetence, in students of higher education. At the same time, developments devoted to the study of ethical aspects of foreign language learning have not yet been identified. The purpose of the article was to clarify the specifics of the ethical components of foreign language learning in a higher education institution. Two main tasks were completed: 1) the level of formation of the ethical components of foreign language learning was revealed; 2) pedagogical recommendations are formulated based on the obtained results. In accordance with the stated goals, a questionnaire for self‐assessment of the ethical components of foreign language learning was developed, a student sample was formed, a survey was conducted, a mathematical calculation of the results was carried out, and the respondent groups were characterized in accordance with the formation of the ethical components of foreign language learning. All statistical calculations (arithmetic mean, cluster analysis) were performed using the Statistica 10.0. According to the author’s methodology, the formation of the ethical components of foreign language learning is based on the clarification of the level of expression of each of the fifteen parameters, which are grouped in three main areas: 1) sociocultural competence in the ethical aspect; 2) communicative competence in an ethical aspect; 3) axiological competence in the ethical aspect. Sociocultural competence includes familiarity with the habits and traditions of a foreign country; awareness of the historical past of a foreign country; familiarity with the modern life of a foreign country; ability and readiness for effective intercultural interaction; focus on improving socio‐cultural competence. Communicative competence includes the disposition to communicate with foreigners;perception of language and speech characteristics of foreigners; ability and willingness to communicate from equal positions; ability and readiness for conflict‐free communication; focus on improving communicative competence. Axiological competence is based on awareness of foreign cultural values; ability and readiness to perceive foreign cultural values; ability and readiness to broadcast the values of one’s culture; ability and readiness for a conflict‐free combination of values; focus on improving axiological competence. The conducted research revealed that about a third of higher education applicants have a below‐average level,two‐fifths have an average level, one‐tenth have an above‐average level, and about a quarter have a high level. The survey revealed that, in general, Ukrainian students are interested in increasing sociocultural, communicative and axiological competence in the ethical aspect, for which they need competent pedagogical guidance. Based on the obtained results, pedagogical measures are proposed that can improve the general level of moral interests of students of higher education in the context of learning a foreign language
