Abstract

The war significantly changes the media discourse, including linguistic tools that allow to transmit specific information, create the necessary emotional background and set up axiologic points. This linguistic tool is not always used efficiently and properly by journalists. As an example of one of such issues, the article considers the use of the names of military equipment and weapons in journalist practice. The corresponding terminology is considered a kind of “cognitive tool”, which contributes to the understanding and perception of information at collective and individual levels. That is why the ability to use special vocabulary is an important journalist’s professional skill. The most frequent errors were identified and the possibility of improving the skills of the military vocabulary of journalists was considered based on mass media texts analysis. The peculiarities of the implementation of the new-old, effective-inefficient, arms-related opposition in mass media discourse are analyzed. The attention is focused on the modern military jargon features and some of its linguistic and extralinguistic characteristics. The problems of borrowings functioning, in particular, the names of Western weapons in Ukrainian media were considered. It is emphasized that the actual mistakes in articles, reports, messages from the fronts reduce not only the quality of journalistic work and testify to unprofessionalism, but also undermine the confidence to the Ukrainian information field. Moreover, inaccuracies or errors can give an occasion for active counter-propaganda by the enemy. That is why the proper use of military vocabulary is important for text perceptions in the aspect of “true – false”. For the appropriate training of specialists, it is proposed to correct curricula and plans at the faculties of journalism. The problems outlined in the article can be considered not only in the study of special disciplines but also in the study of “Modern Ukrainian”, “Practical stylistics of modern Ukrainian”, “Foreign language by professional direction” courses, etc.
