Abstract

The phenomenon of a female doctor, which has become a noticeable feature of the modern era in Europe, is now gaining relevance in the context of ensuring gender equality in professional implementation both in Ukraine and in the globalized world as a whole. The goal of our project is to systematize, generalize and rethink the past admission of women to the study of medical science. We focus our attention on the material concerning the deployment of these processes on the territory of Ukraine and Eastern Europe as a whole. The chronological boundaries are defined as the end of the 1850s – 1870s. In the study, we apply the concepts of American comparative historical sociology, which contribute to understanding why age and gender remain sources of inequality; The history of life approaches; developments of modern ego-documentary schools when working with autobiographical material. The history of the formation of higher female medical education in Eastern Europe gives reason to use the statement of S. Jacks-Blake that the competition for the admission of women to the medical profession is truly “history-making”. Her study convinces of the importance of the anthropological factor - the community of people involved in its implementation. Among them are ambitious young women, scientists, professors, civil servants, government officials, social activists, philanthropists and simply caring people. Their faith in the progress of society through scientific medical knowledge, the expediency of doctors serving the general education of the people, the need for emancipation, self-realization and personal labor of women was based on civil responsibility for the state of the state. Medical faculties of Ukrainian universities unanimously declared support for women's requests.
