Abstract

The article addresses the applied aspects of diagnosing non-verbal communication in children of younger preschool age with autism spectrum disorder. It emphasizes the relevance of this research and outlines a range of issues that need resolution. These include the insufficiency of systematic research, a certain neglect of non-verbal communication issues in comparison to verbal communication, and the need to improve methods of corrective and developmental influence. This improvement is essential to ensure the individual development trajectory of each child with autism spectrum disorder. In line with its objectives, the article presents a method for diagnosing the peculiarities of non-verbal communication in children with autism. This method, developed by American specialists, has been adapted by the authors. The adaptation includes translation, creation of forms, systematization of indicators, and evaluation criteria, and it is implemented through observation and expert evaluation. The observation card assesses the child’s nonverbal communication in usual conditions. It considers several indicators, such as facial expression, gestures, eye contact, vocalization, and visual orientation, and rates them on a five-point scale. Expert evaluations, conducted by specialists and parents, aim to assess various aspects of non-verbal communication in young preschool children with autism. These aspects include the general repertoire, understanding of its components, and the purposeful use of non-verbal means of communication. The authors demonstrate how the proposed methodology is implemented and identify an insufficient level of non-verbal communication development. This methodology includes an individualized approach for correcting the nonverbal communication peculiarities of each child with autism. The applied aspects outlined in this article provide an important foundation for developing a program to enhance non-verbal communication in children of younger preschool age with autism. This program integrates methods with scientifically proven effectiveness, utilizing their resources for optimal outcomes
