Abstract

The article deals with the analysis of peculiarities of separating Ukrainian soldiers from the general mass of prisoners of the tsarist army who were held in multinational POW camps on the territory of Austria-Hungary in 1915. To this end, the ULU representatives organized surveys and drew up lists of those willing to move to a new place of detention – Ukrainian Freistadt camp. The compillation of such lists was quite a difficult task, because among the prisoners there was always a significant number of imperial ideology supporters – Black Hundreds and “Little Russians”, who exerted psychological pressure on the prisoners, trying to hinder communication of Ukrainians with the envoys of the Union. Nevertheless, such a census was successfully conducted, which enabled to lay a lasting foundation for further actions to unite Ukrainians, and moreover, to form (albeit small) a circle of Ukrainian activists who, even at the risk of their lives, can carry out the difficult task of spreading national liberation ideas not only in the camps, but also on the territories of the Russian Ukraine. Because of the actions of the Union, selected Ukrainian prisoners were gathered in the Freistadt camp, which remained the center of Ukrainian life during 1915–1918.
