Abstract
The article analyzes the peculiarities of the functioning of newspapers and magazines in the camp of interned Ukrainian soldiers of the Szczypіornо Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic in Poland during 1922 – the first half of 1923. It was noted that the camp press played an extremely important organizational and mobilization role in the environment of the internees, at the same time trying to satisfy their special needs. All camp periodicals urgently needed the material assistance of camp residents, actually their charitable contributions, which were transferred to the press funds of the publications; at the same time, their editors tried to accumulate funds by issuing subscriptions to periodicals both in Poland and abroad. In view of the chronic lack of funds, the typographic performance of all camp publications was quite mediocre, but this state of affairs did not prevent the camp press from effectively fulfilling its tasks thanks to a consistent editorial policy, constant live feedback from readers to their editors, and the thematic variety of magazine materials. The article provides information about three camp periodicals – the non-periodical journal «Herald of the union of medical assistants in emigration», the newspapers «New Life» and «Ukrainian Trumpeter», as well as the one-day newspaper «On the Ruins» (the history of publishing another magazine in Szczypіornо – «Religious-Scientific Bulletin» was covered in a separate publication). Among them, the all-army newspaper «Ukrainian Trumpeter», which was distributed in all camps of interned troops of the Ukrainian People's Republic, exerted the most respectable influence. From the very beginning of its publication, the new magazine was respected both by the interned soldiers and among Ukrainian political emigrants in Poland and other European countries. Its pages covered important events in the world, presented a camp chronicle with reviews of the military's cultural and educational activities, primarily in the theater and publishing fields. The reproduction of the camp press became another evidence of the endurance of the Ukrainian military, its ability to fight for its ideals despite all the difficulties of emigration life.
