Abstract

This paper gives an overview of individual style reproduction in translation. Attention has been drawn to the corpora and quantitative methods in the translation equivalence researches. The object of the study is the idiostyle of J. D. Salinger’s novel “The Catcher in the Rye” and its reproduction in Ukrainian translation by O. Logvynenko. Traditional and newest approaches of idiostyle reproduction during translation have been analysed. The dominant feature of the J. D. Salinger’s novel idiostyle is recognized as slang vocabulary usage. It is suggested that at the first stage of carrying out the translation analysis, the comparison of the quantitative characteristics of the source and target texts should be practiced. The procedure for contrastive quantitative analysis has been described: the creation of an electronic version of the source and target texts, followed normalization; estimation of the slang words and word forms number and their frequencies by the specially written computer program; the definition of the slag word forms belonging to certain parts of speech, thematic groups, as well as lexical and semantic models. The basic principles of slang units’ translation and the frequency of their application are calculated. The article focuses specifically on the methods of slang units’ reproduction, such as lexical equivalent, equivalent counterpart, generalization, conversion. Involvement of statistics research methods allows to testify a relatively small percentage of such translation methods as stylistically neutral and zero-translation options, indicating a slight translation deformation and high level of adequacy in slang units translation during reproduction of the novel "The Catcher in the Rye" in Ukrainian by O. Logvinenko. It has been proved, that idiostyle dominants and their correspondences in Ukrainian translation of the novel “The Catcher in the Rye” can be considered as inessential and statistically valid. It has been clarified that quantitative indicators are able to determine the main vectors of the analysis idiostyle dominants and their correspondences in translation.
