Abstract
The article deals with an urgent problem of the theory and methodology of professional training such as the formation of the English language communicative competence of non-philological students by means of professional literature reading. Professional literature reading is viewed on from the point of the integrated approach to teaching different communicative skills. In reference to the current research into the problem and based on the evidence of mass teaching and their own experience, the authors define the conditions that must be favorable for the efficient formation of English language communicative skills by the students. Among such conditions are the following: the integrated formation of the skills including combination of professional literature with other written and oral communicative activities i.e. speaking, writing and listening; the use of pre-text and after-text activities and other tasks which stimulate thinking and communicative processes, encourage active discussing and expressing a personal opinion, appealing to personal experience and knowledge of students; organizing a stage-by-stage process of completing written tasks that follow a main reading activity and reflect the specifics of a particular professional sphere; the combination of various ways of perceiving information including textual graphics and video, active employment of Internet resources for integrated teaching of professional literature reading and listening skills. The article also presents arguments in favour of the use of jigsaw reading and extensive reading under the conditions of classroom activities and student self-study correspondingly; the development of the linguistic competence as an important precondition for the formation of communicative strategies and competence. The authors substantiate modelling problem situations that reflect professional needs in a particular area, the selection of appropriate texts for reading; the use of integrated tasks from international standardized tests, e.g. those dealing with professional subjects and problems of a particular industry or sphere of activity.
