Abstract
The article deals with the theoretical and practical principles of creating English social media slang. Data from the 2022 Social Media Popularity Ranking among users aged 18 and over, conducted by GlobalLogic, a leader in digital product development services, is presented in terms of quantitative indicators of social media users. The essence of the «mukbang» trend is outlined. A survey of microblogs was carried out to conduct a sample of English social media slang following the rating of the microblog among other microblogs as of 2023. The percentage ratio of the number of English social media slang by the method of creation is presented. It was found that the most productive way of creating English social media slang is abbreviation – 29%, truncation of words and phrases 19%, creation of new lexical units 11.1%, eratives 9.6%, metaphorization – 6.6%, affixal word formation 7.4%, word formation 3.7%, lexical slang units formed with the help of conversion – 3%, and also 3% reach slang exclamations. It was determined that among the identified 29% of abbreviations of English social media slang, the alphanumeric abbreviation with the substitution of consonant symbols prevails (35%) (ASAP – as soon as possible); HF – have fun (I want to have fun); DM – direct message (personal messages on Instagram); FAQ – frequently asked questions (frequent questions); GR8 – great (excellent, excellent); 2G2BT – too good to be true (too good to be true), etc.). It has been proven that the inferior version of compression and subsequent presentation of information in social networks is one of the most effective ways of saving language resources because it is explained by the need to type a simpler text at a fast pace to achieve the fastest possible exchange of information. Social media users tend to simplify sentences and preserve the meaning of information for communication purposes
