Abstract
The article contains a brief analysis of research works of Ukrainian and foreign scholars in the named field. The results of ways of rendering the interglossemes in Ukrainian-English translation of fiction are presented, the presentation being based on the Roma Franko’s texts of short prose fiction translation originally written by B. Hrinchenko, H. Khotkevych and M. Kotsyubynsky. The considered examples contain the interglossemes in Russian, Polish and French. The correlation between interglosseme-retaining translation strategy choice and the interglosseme’s language has been ascertained. Among the defining factors are the interglosseme language’s alphabet and its relation extent to the Ukrainian and English languages. In cases when the interglosseme is translated into English, the following transformations have been considered as: adding the context, translation or adding the comments, author’s text formatting (mostly italicising), omitting the interglosseme with no compensation provided, selecting the standardised equivalent in the target language. The aim of the comments can be not only translating the interglosseme, but also providing the reader with the necessary background knowledge. It has been concluded that neither presence nor absence of comments depends on the selected way of rendering the interglosseme. In the considered examples, the comments were either integrated to the text or moved to the separate glossary. The cases of retaining the interglosseme with omitting the comment in the translation text have been also considered.
