The purpose: to reveal the social functions of music in the history of ancient India, to reveal its socio-cultural role in the life of Indian society; to show the processes of influence of the pre-Aryan musical tradition on the formation and development of the socio-cultural foundations of Indian civilization. The methodological basis of this study was the following approaches: interdisciplinary, which makes it possible to attract concepts from other fields of knowledge (psychology, philosophy, cultural studies); historical and cultural studies – consideration of a particular phenomenon in the process of historical development; theoretical generalization – for the results of the study. The scientific novelty of the study is that it is shown that the Vedic period of the development of Indian society is the most important period of semantic development of music. It has been shown that it was during this period that the culture, philosophy and religion of Indian society, which were closely intertwined, were actively developing. Conclusions. It has been found that the social functions of music influenced the behavior and consciousness of ancient Indians regardless of class and caste. The socio-cultural role of music in the life of Indian society has become prominent, it has influenced the formation and development of the socio-cultural foundations of Indian civilization. Music has become an important component in all spheres of everyday life. Every family was involved in the study of Vedic hymns to some extent, and their chanting, dancing, and playing instruments were mandatory during all rituals and ceremonies. This aspect requires further research.
