Abstract

The purpose of the research is a detailed analysis of the state and trends in the development of lifelong education abroad, namely in EU member states, and the determination of the role of lifelong learning in ensuring the national interests of these states in the humanitarian, social and economic spheres. In addition, there will be measures proposed for the development of the system of continuing education in Ukraine. Awareness of the importance of lifelong education for human development led to the modernization of European policy in the field of education at the beginning of the 21st century. The Lisbon Summit of the Council of Europe in March 2000 adopted the "Memorandum on Lifelong Education" (Commission of the European Communities, 2000). The Memorandum emphasizes that continuing education should become the main political program of civil society, social unity and employment. Six principles of continuous education were also defined in the Memorandum.
