Abstract

The article reveals the meaning of the metamorphoses of the Third Symphony second edition by Borys Lyatoshinsky. Based on the understanding of the conditions of cultural development during Soviet totalitarianism, the composer’s approach to the second edition is considered, and the quality of the changes that ensured the symphony’s success and its ambiguous perception are analysed. The phenomenon of preservation of figurative content in the second edition is explained by analogy with the storylines of Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses’, whose characters preserve their traits after personal transformation. It is demonstrated that the second edition preserved the composer’s original intention, expressed in the epigraph to the first edition.
