Abstract
The article highlights the problem of journalist professional qualities formation in English language teaching, which is regarded as an important component of their professional training. Based on the analysis of current research and in reference to the principles of the competence approach, the author characterizes the professional qualities that need to be developed, substantiates the conditions of efficient formation of journalist professional qualities in the student classroom and self-study activities. Among these conditions are the following: the use of English language on-line resources that highlight ethical and legal issues of journalism, present information about the career and achievements of prominent personalities in the English language media environment; the importance of creating favorable conditions for the formation of such key qualities of a journalist as a great personal scope, inquisitiveness, erudition and critical thinking; the use of the topics concerned with global problems and challenges faced by the humankind and our country in particular, the development of the civil society, the realization of democratic and liberal values, patriotism and our country European prospects by students. The article emphasizes the importance of the organization of student self-study activities with a view of the improvement of their writing skills under an active teacher role, the encouragement of student autonomy and stage-by-stage enhancement of their writing. An important condition of journalist professional quality development is the introduction of the students to a typical structure and format of on-line editions by means of special communicative tasks. The aim of the tasks is to encourage students for active information search based on certain criteria, the processing of the information and its representation in monologue and dialogue communication. Lastly, in the context of the problem in question, the article justifies the advisability of the development of student socio-cultural competence, with the use of materials of fiction and feature films in particular.
