Abstract

Recently, the topic of distance learning has become the subject of heated discussions both in the educational environment and in society in general, which has both supporters and those who do not perceive it as such. The purpose of the article is to clarify the current situation in this area, identify positive and negative elements, and discuss prospects for its use during the training of students in publishing and editing. Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University was chosen for the study. The research was based on available source material, statistical and narrative information, and created and conducted a survey of the main categories of stakeholders, in particular, higher education applicants and scientific-pedagogical staff, in order to assess the perception, effectiveness and most productive formats of distance learning. The results of the survey completely disprove the idea that distance education is relevant only under extreme conditions. The actual results of the University’s activities and the analysis of the responses of focus group participants show that properly organized distance education, in particular in the chosen field of knowledge, is considered equal to face-toface education. In addition, its systematic and comprehensive implementation contributes to: improving the skills of teachers and students in the use of computer and communication technologies; being the most inclusive format of education; reducing the financial burden on students and educational institutions; expanding the possibilities of combining study with work; promoting the internationalization of education, etc. A certain problem in the relations of students and teaching staff with the practice bases was revealed, primarily due to the unwillingness of the older generation of managers of this link to accept rapid changes in information and communication technologies. The reasons for this condition and ways to improve it have been clarified. The leading practice of the Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University and other Ukrainian and foreign institutions of higher education proves the expediency of using distance education based on the complex use of information and communication technologies.
