Abstract
The relevance of the study into the creative work of the prominent writer Can Xue (残雪) is due to its role in shaping the artistic paradigm of women’s prose in contemporary China, where the theme of women and their special being occupies an important place. In accordance with the general concept of women’s writing, which is peculiar to both Western and Eastern literatures, Can Xue is primarily decoding the stereotypical idea of the role of women in the «male» world. The aim of the article is to propose a typology of characters in Can Xue’s short fiction through the prism of the author’s concept of «women’s voice» as an attempt to find or preserve one’s own identity. The object of analysis is the works «The Hut on the Hill» (山上的小屋, 1985), «The Bull» (公牛, 1985), «Soap Bubbles in Dirty Water» (污水上的肥皂泡, 1985), «In the Desert» (旷野里, 1986), the methods of research of which are comparative and psychoanalytic, and the technique of commented reading is also used. It has been observed that the main spatial topoi of Can Xue’s short fiction, where women’s existence takes place, are the traditional «family» and «marriage». The female characters practically do not go beyond these topoi, but the writer focuses on internal and external conflicts caused by their dissatisfaction with the stereotypical roles they have to play in the family and marriage. In «The Hut on the Hill», the heroine’s behavior, which defends her right to choose, does not correspond to the traditional idea of the «obedient daughter». Equally, the stereotype of the «caring mother» is destroyed in the story «A Soap Bubble in Dirty Water». The inconsistency with the patriarchal requirements for an «obedient keeper of the house» makes the heroines of the stories «The Bull» and «In the Desert» different and alien. In general, in combination with a special artistic style that intertwines the real and the unreal, the theme of women in Can Xue’s interpretation acquires existential depth and debatable character. The author’s recognisable style, which is characterised by fragmented narrative, symbolic content and philosophical nature of archetypal images (house, garden, mirror, etc.), and a specific narration (from the perspective of a female narrator), reveals one of the variants of women’s prose in contemporary Chinese literature. The efforts of the characters in Can Xue’s short fiction to find their own space and their own «I» are markers of the tragic existence of the female character
