Abstract

The article is devoted to a comparative analysis of the special reflection of the concept of MODESTY in Ukrainian and Chinese linguistic cultures. The interpretation of modesty has a number of features in both cultures, which is clearly reflected in the hierarchical value system of each people, in which modesty occupies one of the leading places for the Eastern culture, while for the Western it is a completely insignificant value. Through the prism of intercultural communication, the phenomenon of modesty is an urgent task to study, since the absence or insufficient amount of knowledge usually entails a global misunderstanding between representatives of the two sides of communication at different levels (both business and conversational), which as a result violates the etiquette norms of behavior at a minimum. This approach, following A. M. Prykhodko, is called polylingual, which consists in comparing the concept of the universal order of one language with its equivalent (analog) in another in order to clarify common (integral) and distinctive (differential) features (model "one concept – two languages"). In this way, "the same linguistic and cultural specificity is manifested, which makes up a unique and unique picture of the world, which is reproduced by natural language" [6, p. 406]. Based on the analysis of the dictionary definitions of the concept of "modesty" presented in modern Ukrainian and Chinese dictionaries, signs that verbalize the studied concept in both languages were identified and recorded. On the example of Ukrainian and Chinese quotations of famous figures, aphorisms, proverbs, etc., which are imprinted ideas of each people about one or another aspect of life, the cultural aspect of the reflection of the concept of MODESTY is analyzed. By means of a comparative analysis, it is proved that the universal concept, which belongs to the group of moral and ethical concepts, has both common and distinctive features in the process of verbal and non-verbal expression in Ukrainian and Chinese linguistic cultures, which promotes or, on the contrary, hinders successful intercultural communication.
